Escher’s 1943 lithograph, Reptiles. The composition features a desk cluttered with everyday objects—a book on zoology, a dodecahedron, and a tin of "JOB" rolling papers—centered around a drawing of a tessellated hexagonal grid. In a brilliant display of visual paradox, the flat, interlocking reptiles crawl out of their two-dimensional pattern, transform into fully realized three-dimensional creatures, and circulate across the objects before re-entering the drawing.
The lower-left corner retains Escher’s stylized "MCE" monogram and the date "III-'43," while the bottom margin features the printed credit "M. C. ESCHER Reptiles." This print captures the intricate stippling and tonal depth characteristic of Escher’s mathematical and philosophical approach to art.
