Richard Badham Thornhill’s The Shooting Directory, a foundational text of 19th-century British sporting literature.
Published in London by Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme
Printed by J. Browne in Bath, 1804
This copy is a First Edition, Second Issue, identifiable by the suppression of pages 215–220. These pages were famously "cancelled" by the publisher shortly after the initial printing due to the author’s controversial and biting criticisms of the King’s hunting abilities and a dispute involving the Duke of Richmond and the Manton Patent Breech.
Contains 7 wonderful engraved plates of dog hunts, as well as several fold out forms and diagram.
Original owner's signature and notations included in the front flap, pasted over with a later owner's name plate "Edward Oliver"
Book measures 8.5 x 10.25 inches
Good to fair condition, with clean inside pages (a few with period in notations), detached cover board and missing spine covering,
possibly missing a page before the title page, otherwise complete.
