Wilson Bell - Drummer Boy - 88th Pennsylvania Infantry, Company K

Enlisted October 5th, 1862 in Philadelphia, PA

Served as a musician through the following engagements:

- Battle of Cedar Mountain

- Pope's Campaign in Northern Virginia

- Second Battle of Bull Run

- Battle of Chantilly

- Battles of South Mountain

- Battle of Antietam

- Battle of Fredericksburg

 

He was discharged by surgeon's medical certificate at the

convalescence camp in Virginia, so had suffered injury either at

the Battle of Fredericksburg or during Burnside's mud march toward Richmond.


The document is signed Lt. Col. Samuel M. Kelsey per Pvt. Will Jones and reads in part:

"...is hereby Discharged from the service of the United States

this twenty eight day of January 1863 at Convalescent Camp Virginia

by reason of Surgeons Certificate of Disability."

 

"Said Wilson Bell was born in Philadelphia in the State of Pennsylvania

is twelve years of age, four feet seven inches high, fair complexion,

grey eyes, dark hair, and musician by occupation when enrolled a student."
