is appointed Commanding Sergeant of the 25th Iowa Volunteer Infantry
by commander George A. Stone and adjutant L. K. Clark in October of 1862
Garner would go on to become aide-de-camp in the Iowa Calvary
and all three men were present to witness W. T. Sherman's burning of South Carolina
