World War I-era cabinet photograph of an African American Soldier in the United States Army. Dating to circa 1917–1919, the subject is captured in a poignant seated profile, posed as if writing a letter home—a common and evocative theme for soldiers preparing for deployment with the American Expeditionary Forces.
The soldier is outfitted in a M1917 Service Coat with a standing collar, featuring visible collar disks that identify him as a member of the Infantry. His rank is that of a Private, and his attire is completed by a standard peaked service cap and leg puttees.
Possibly part of the segregated 92nd or 93rd Divisions, units that saw significant service on the Western Front. The photograph is presented on its original oversized, embossed dark-brown board mount, characteristic of professional studio work from the late 1910s.
