Original vintage press photograph from May 12, 1962, showing Edward M. (Ted) Kennedy greeting "Freedom Rider North" David Harris upon his arrival in Hyannis, Mass.
Harris, a 43-year-old civil rights activist, was sent North on a one-way bus ticket by the Capital Citizens Council of Little Rock, Arkansas, in a segregationist tactic known as "Reverse Freedom Rides." Kennedy's presence at the bus station to welcome Harris was a high-profile gesture of support during a critical and volatile period of the Civil Rights Movement.
