World War I photograph (Barry Studio) of an African American Soldier in the United States Army. Dating to circa 1917–1919, the subject is captured in a formal studio setting, wearing the standard M1917 Service Coat, high-standing collar, and a M1911 Campaign Hat with decorative cord. His uniform is completed with period-correct wool breeches, spiral puttees, and russet leather boots.
The soldier’s rank is that of a Private, and his branch insignia is consistent with the Infantry. Possibly a member of the segregated 92nd or 93rd Divisions, units that achieved notable distinction on the Western Front.
