ORIGINAL HISTORICAL EPHEMERA
Excellent War-date Letter autograph signed by Cumberland, Maryland native politician
Samuel L. Gouverneur (1799-1865) - secretary to President James Monroe
who married Monroe's daughter with a wedding at the White House
and later married Mary Digges Lee, daughter of Maryland Governor Thomas Sim Lee
Likely as sad case where disability supports were woefully insufficient,
the letter establishes a trust for the living expenses of his deaf-mute son,
James Monroe Gouverneur (1822–1885), who was committed to the Baltimore Asylum for his adult life.
The letter is addressed to the younger brother, Samuel Gouverneur Jr., and
contributes $5,000 in addition to the sale of something unnamed
"...for the support of your brother, during his life..."
Dated October 1864
Also later signed by John B. Fay and used as testimony in 1871,
so it seems the soldier was indeed cared for many years.
