Feb. 27, 1864
"We live now subject day and night to the raids of the hated & detested foe-
we cannot ride out without the feat and probability of returning unhorsed-
Our citizens are arrested on the slightest pretext (and sometimes without any)
and carried off to languish in prison for months together.
We are so cut off from our people that 'Greenbacks' is the currency of this part of the country-
and money being rated by some at five cents in the dollar.
Notwithstanding this we see Col. Mosby and his band of merry men frequently since Christmas,
he has given two most delightful serenades-
the instruments being violin & guitar accompanied by eight fine manly voices.
