New Norcia Australia - Catholic Benedictine Monk Settlement
established by Rosendo Salvado, the Spanish monk, missionary, bishop, author
and founder of the Territorial Abbey of New Norcia in Western Australia.
Rare albumin print CDV photo of a Benedictine monk posed with a saw
and two converted Christian aboriginal boys.
Photo potentially by Australian photographer Walter William Thwaites,
but more likely taken by Salvado's brother and fellow monk, Santos Salvado
who documented their work during this period (circa 1865-75).
It was more recently purchased from a French antiques dealer and may have been
distributed there while Rosendo Salvado was in France raising money
to bring back to the mission and making arguments for better treatment of natives.
